Five loaves for more than five thousand and its interesting food for thought
One of the well known gospel miracles that Jesus performed is that of multiplying five loaves and two fish among more than five thousand. The miracle shows us how our heavenly Father loves blessing richly through multiplication. After all, "Be fruitful and multiply" was His first blessing for humanity. John Chapter-6 starts with Jesus sitting with His disciples on a mountain side and a multitude coming toward Him. Jesus decides to feed them and asks Philip a question to see what would be his answer.Philip's estimate
Jesus asks philip as to where, food can be bought for this multitude. But Philip answers as to how much money would be required.
What we see here is a typical human tendency ! Trying to arrive at the minimum sum required. How best to minimize expenses and to maximize outcome?
But philip's estimate is poor even in terms of what each person there can get. This conversation indirectly tell us about Philip's mind : "Food for so many, even if say a little, but where's the money going to come from ?"
The young lad with loaves and fish
Andrew, another disciple comes across a lad who had come with five loaves of bread and two fish. This lad seems to be a some what prepared guy who came with some food if in case. In his own way, he did contribute to the seed that was going to be multiplied soon He took this food along with him, might be for a quick meal, but never did he expect that this was going to be an unlimited meal to everyone who gathered there
Our Lord's multiplication
We could see that people were made to sit in groups and after Jesus gives thanks, multiplication happens followed by distribution. Not the other way around ( wherein first multiplication happening and then asking people to be sit in groups for distribution) . Jesus shows us to what extent one should have faith in God. When the Lord provides, it is so much overflowing. Everyone there could have as much as he/she wished to have. Jesus disciples could see that what started as 5 loaves+2 fish ended as food for 5000 men (along with women and children)+ 12 baskets of left over. Our God is a faith answering God and satisfies His people with abundant provisions.
Picking up the leftovers
It is to realize how much was needed and how much surplus was actually given. We definitely have a gentle Father whose love abounds to give the best and more than sufficient quantity for his children
Things that we can quickly learn
- Many times we may arrive at some estimates as per our human limits, but never should we fall short of faith that our wonderful God is able to do much higher
- When we are prepared in our christian walk like that boy with loaves, even we could contribute in a way to the blessing of the greater group
- The other important lesson that we learn from this passage is when we commit our small things into Lord's hand, he is able to multiply them multi-fold and also into a blessing for larger community
- Your offering/tithe could also be used by the Lord this way, multiplying and giving it back to you and multiplying it many fold and making it a blessing for many ministries.
